A Brief Overview of Nail Fungus
Nobody wants to have any health problem, whether it be minor or major. In the grand scheme of things nail fungus isn't a huge problem, but it can be ugly and uncomfortable. For some people it definitely needs to be treated because it can cause other problems due to their previously existing health conditions.
So what exactly is nail fungus? It is a condition where fungus gets under your skin, either through the space between the nail and the nail bed or through a small cut near your nail. When you have this sort of infection, your nails might turn yellow or white, they can split or crumble, separate from the skin, or get thicker.
Sometimes the condition becomes painful and makes it difficult to wear shoes or to walk. In these cases you should definitely try to treat it. Some people are more susceptible to nail fungus than other people.
These include people that have diabetes or compromised immune systems, people who are over 60, people who live or work in hot and humid places, people who wear shoes that make their feet sweaty, and people with hangnails or ingrown toenails. Those with compromised immune systems or diabetes need to be especially careful to try to avoid this condition, and to treat it if they should get it.
Many times this condition can be diagnosed by the doctor just by looking and it and discussing any symptoms you may have had. Sometimes it is necessary to test for fungus as well. Once you have been diagnosed, you can discuss the possible treatment options.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to treat these conditions and it can end up costing a bit since it sometimes takes up to a year to fully get rid of the fungus. Once you get rid of the nail fungus you will have to be careful to keep from getting reinfected, since this can be easily done.
In order to prevent yourself from getting this condition, there are some precautions you can take. First of all, you should wear cotton socks and shoes that allow your feet to breathe. You shouldn't wear wet shoes, and you should change your socks whenever your feet are wet. You also want to make sure to always wear flip flops or some sort of shoes in public places, including public showers.
You should avoid sharing any personal items that come into contact with your feet, such as nail clippers, towels, or socks. Finally, wash and dry your feet thoroughly each night before going to bed.
There are various treatment methods that you can try. These include anti-fungal lotions or creams or nail polish, either prescription or non-prescription. Treatment will take at least a few weeks, and possibly much longer. Sometimes the treatment that you try will not work, and you will have to try something different.
Speaking with a doctor can help you to decide the best treatment options for you to try in order to get rid of your particular condition, including the prescriptions options.
